The college was created in 1438 by the Archbishop of Canterbury. It is now especially famous for the Codrington library, built in 1751 after a gift of Christopher Codrington, and because it does not have student. Each year, the college only accepts one or two fellows after a very competitive examination.

It is one of the wealthiest colleges in Oxford.
